Declutter before selling, and your home will look bigger, brighter, and easier to love. That matters this fall. Homes around Savannah are taking longer to sell, and buyers have more to choose from. So your home has to look its best in every photo and every showing.

The good news? You don’t need to buy new furniture. Instead, you need less of it. Here’s what the numbers say, and how a simple storage unit can help your home stand out.

Savannah’s Market Has Slowed: Here’s What Changed

First, a look at the local numbers. Next Move Real Estate’s September 2026 Savannah Market Report uses data from the Savannah Multi-List Corporation. Across that MLS, homes took a median of 64 days to sell, up 28% from a year earlier. Supply reached 6.5 months, up 25%. The report notes that supply has risen every month since May.

Inside Savannah itself, the picture is similar. Supply rose to 6.6 months, and the median home took 60 days to sell. Meanwhile, Realtor.com’s Savannah market page showed about 2,100 homes for sale, up nearly 27% from last year. Its median days on market for active listings was 79 days.

Is it a true buyer’s market? Not quite. Realtor.com calls Savannah a balanced market right now. Still, buyers clearly have more choices and more time than they did last fall. The same MLS report says buyers have “more room to negotiate than buyers had last fall.”

What a slower market means for sellers

Here’s the encouraging part. Across the MLS, sellers still got 99.7% of their original list price. In other words, well-priced homes still sell close to asking. They just take longer. As the report puts it, rising days on market “raises the cost of starting too high.” Therefore, presentation matters more than ever. When buyers can scroll past dozens of listings, the clean, roomy-looking home gets the click.

Why You Should Declutter Before Selling

Real estate agents agree: the smartest first step is to declutter before selling. In the National Association of Realtors’ 2025 Profile of Home Staging, decluttering was agents’ top recommendation for sellers. A full 91% of sellers’ agents recommended it. Cleaning the whole home (88%) and improving curb appeal (77%) came next.

Staging helps, too. In NAR’s staging research, 83% of buyers’ agents said staging helped buyers picture the home as their own. Also, 49% of sellers’ agents said staging cut the time a home spent on the market.

So, where should you start? Buyers’ agents named the living room as the most important room to stage (37%). The primary bedroom (34%) and kitchen (23%) followed. That’s a handy roadmap for your first weekend of work.

Photos come first

Most buyers meet your home online before they ever park in the driveway. In fact, 73% of buyers’ agents said listing photos were important to their clients. A crowded room looks small on a phone screen. On the other hand, an open floor and clear walls make the same room feel bigger.

How to Declutter Before Selling, Room by Room

When you declutter before selling, the goal isn’t an empty home. Rather, it’s about letting buyers see the space instead of your stuff. Follow these simple steps.

1. Living room: pull out the extra furniture

Start with the room buyers care about most. Remove the extra recliner, the second side table, and the overflowing bookshelf. Keep one sofa, a chair or two, and a coffee table. As a result, walkways open up and the room photographs wider.

2. Primary bedroom: think hotel, not storage room

Next, keep the bed, nightstands, and one dresser. Pack the exercise bike, the laundry pile, and the extra chair. Also, thin out the closet. Buyers will open it, and a half-full closet looks roomy.

3. Kitchen: clear the counters

Put small appliances away and pack seasonal dishes. Then clear the fridge door of magnets and papers. Clean counters make a kitchen look larger and newer.

4. Garage, closets, and the spare room

Finally, don’t let the garage become the dumping ground. Buyers look there, too. Box up holiday decor, sports gear, and tools you won’t need for a few months.

5. Personal items and photos

Family photos and collections are precious. However, they make it harder for buyers to imagine their own life in your home. Pack them carefully now, and they’ll be ready for your next place.

Where to Put It All: Storage While Your Home Is Listed

Here’s the catch. Once you declutter before selling, the stuff has to go somewhere. Stacking it in the garage or a back bedroom just moves the clutter to another photo.

That’s where a storage unit helps. At Sid’s Self Storage in Pembroke, every unit is drive-up, ground-floor, and fully enclosed. You back up to your door and unload. No stairs and no long hallways. We’re about 35 minutes from Savannah, just off GA-119 and about two minutes from I-16 Exit 143.

Which unit size fits a staging project?

  • 5×10: boxes, decor, small furniture, and closet overflow.
  • 10×10: our most popular size. It’s great for the extra living room set, a dresser, and plenty of boxes.
  • 10×20: for bigger jobs, like clearing several rooms or the whole garage.

For most sellers, a 10×10 is the sweet spot. Not sure? Try the size calculator on our home page.

Month-to-month means no guessing

Nobody knows exactly how long a listing will take. That’s why our units are month-to-month with no long-term contract. Keep your unit while the house is on the market. Then, after closing, move everything straight to your new home. You can even pay online or set up autopay, so it’s one less thing to track.

Plus, you get 24/7 gate access with your own gate code. If you need something back before a showing, come any time.
