A well-packed storage unit protects your belongings, fits far more than you’d expect, and lets you grab what you need without unloading half the unit. A poorly packed one turns into a Tetris nightmare — and worse, damages your things.

Start with a plan, not a truck full of boxes
Before you unload a single item, take five minutes to plan the layout:
- Heavy, non-fragile items go on the bottom and back — appliances, mattresses, sturdy furniture.
- Boxes stack in the middle — heaviest on the bottom, lightest on top.
- Fragile items stay near the front where they’re easy to remove first.
- Frequently accessed items also stay near the front — seasonal decorations, tools you use monthly, business inventory you rotate.
- Leave a walking aisle down the center from the door to the back wall.
Use the right boxes — and pack them right
Uniform box sizes stack better and use less space. A few packing rules:
- Buy new boxes, not grocery store leftovers. Old boxes lose structural strength and collapse under weight.
- Small boxes for heavy items (books, dishes, tools). Large boxes for light items (linens, clothing, pillows).
- Fill every box completely — even light boxes should be topped off with padding so they don’t crush under the weight of the box above.
- Tape both the top and bottom of each box with real packing tape.
- Label every box on at least two sides. Category and destination room. “Kitchen — dishes.” “Master bedroom — closet.”
Protect furniture the right way
Storage damage almost always comes from three things: moisture, pressure, and dust. To avoid all three:
- Wipe everything down before storing. Dust and residue trap moisture over time.
- Wrap wood furniture in moving blankets, not plastic. Plastic traps humidity and can warp finishes.
- Disassemble what you can — bed frames, table legs, shelving units. Keep the hardware in labeled ziplock bags taped to the corresponding piece.
- Stand mattresses on edge against a wall so they don’t get compressed.
- Cover fabric items with sheets for a dust barrier.
- Elevate valuables off the concrete floor with pallets or 2x4s. Concrete can wick moisture.
Appliances need special prep
Refrigerators, washers, and dryers are the most commonly damaged items in storage. Before you load them:
- Defrost and dry refrigerators and freezers completely. Any moisture left inside will grow mold in weeks.
- Drain washing machines fully. Disconnect hoses, tilt the machine to empty residual water.
- Leave appliance doors propped open once in the unit. Sealed doors trap moisture and stink.
- Empty gas from lawn mowers and other engines before storing.
Stack smart, not tall
Ceiling height is usable space, but only if you stack right:
- Heaviest boxes on the floor. Never stack a heavy box on top of a lighter one.
- Uniform box sizes stack more stably than a mix of shapes.
- Don’t lean stacks against furniture — the furniture takes damage over time.
- Never stack anything on upholstered items (couches, chairs). They compress and lose their shape.
What NOT to store
Every storage facility, including Sid’s, has restrictions on what you can put in a unit. Do not store:
- Flammable liquids — gasoline, propane, kerosene, paint thinner
- Firearms and ammunition
- Perishable food (canned goods are usually fine)
- Living plants or animals
- Illegal substances of any kind
- Anything wet or damp — dry it fully before it goes in
Access-friendly packing pays off
Most people access their unit at least once during their rental. If you pack “everything in the back and boxes to the ceiling,” you’ll end up unloading half the unit to reach anything. Instead:
- Keep a written inventory — even a phone note works. “Box 12: Christmas tree, ornaments.”
- Group items by category so all kitchen stuff is together, all bedroom stuff together.
- Number your boxes and note which are near the front vs the back.
